Abstract
The research deals with an aspect of Hadith construction by Al-Tirmithi which is Hadith abridgement in his book “Al-Shamail”, looking at the reasons which caused the Imam to abridge the Hadith, and highlight the places where the abridgement occurred. The researcher concluded that Al-Tirmithi uses abridgement in both the Text (Mitn) and the Attribution (Isnad) of Hadith in different ways; sometimes by switching the Attribution, sometimes by adding the word “and” between the Sheiks (the narrators of Hadith), sometimes by eliminating part of the Text, and sometimes by eliminating the text entirely. Sometimes the abridgement is referred to while other times it is not, and there are many reasons for that. One reason is to refer to only the parts that are relevant to the section topic, another reason is to escape repetition, another reason is due to how well known the Text and Attribution of the Hadith is, and another reason would be the lack of benefit of a Text previously mentioned. The Imam used abridgement in thirty sections of the book.
